Annual firearm hospitalizations per 100,000 inpatient encounters. For the numerator, underlying data came from “Frequencies by Diagnosis and Procedure Codes” released by HCUP from their National Inpatient Sample. ICD-9-CM codes were used for 2000-2014. ICD-10-CM codes were used for 2016-2020. For the denominator, underlying data on total inpatient encounters (across all diagnoses) came from HCUP documentation in “Introduction to the HCUP National Inpatient Sample (NIS) 2020”
